Abstract - COMCITY
Secured Data Server |
 |
COMCITY GmbH, security experts in Kiel/Germany
(http://www.comcity.de) focusing on LAN/intranet security,
internet security and Storage Service Providing (SSP), announces
an online storage service and in-house solution that will
enable small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) to store their
data in encrypted form on Redhat Linux- or SUN SOLARIS-based
servers. Server-sided encryption/decryption is performed completely
transparently for the user. |
 |
This transparent encryption/decryption is based on a patented
technology. IT is an add-on to the standard operation system's
kernel, encrypting write processes and decrypting reading
processes on the fly. Encrypted data can only be accessed
by authorized users who have knowledge of the keyphrase the
encryption is based on. Due to this concept, even privileged
users (administrators) do not have access to encrypted data,
since keyphrase management is under the sole control of users. |
 |
In order to enhance the usabilty of VPDisk technology, COMCITY
developed a Windows client that opens a secure channel to
the storage servers. It can be used for both mapping network
drives and managing the parameters encryption/decryption is
based on. Built-in mechanism assure that no trivial authentication
tokens can be employed by users and that users have to change
such tokens on a regular basis. |
 |
To our knowledge, COMCITY is the first company on international
markets offering a highly integrated, easy to install and
to administer, state-of-the-art crypto-fileserver solution,
featuring a cachet provided by a legislator. Software products
featuring this cachet are to be used preferably by public
authorities in Germany. |
 |
As mentioned before, COMCITY will make this product available
as an online service over the internet as well, enabling small
and medium sized businesses to externally store their data
in a comfortable and secure way. This solution makes it possible
to meet legislative claims regarding the digital archiving
of data. Such digital archiving has to be undertaken over
a period of ten years in Germany. SMBs, who often neither
have the infrastructure nor qualified personell to fullfill
these demands, will now be offered a cost-effective way to
do so. |
 |
Data will be stored in a high-secure data centre in a subterranean
bunker, in which a clustered, highly available fileserver
environment will be operated. Data will be stored on NAS filers
(Network Attached Storage systems). |
 |
This online solution with its secure data transfer over
the internet is covered by the Seal of Privacy as well, which
makes it possible to store even personal medical data on these
servers. Personal medical data has the highest demands regarding
protection of data privacy in Germany. |
